After my adventures in Saskatoon, I headed to Winnipeg in search of more cider experiences. In my pre-trip research I had a hard time finding anything cider-related to do in Winnipeg. Once in the city, I stumbled upon a few great experiences! The first was visiting the Public Orchard at the Forks.
I have visited the Forks a few times in my trips to Winnipeg but had never seen this orchard!! My friend Ryan (an Edmonton transplant, now living in Winnipeg) and I hopped on our bikes and headed over.
The orchard was created in 2014 by Winnipeg CORE (Community Orchards for Resources and Education). A group of chokecherry trees stood in the location but because they were diseased they had to be removed. Winnipeg CORE proposed the urban orchard and the staff at the Forks were on board to do something innovative with the space.
Winnipeg CORE looks like an amazing organization. They offer workshops, programs for schools, support for communities, and educational opportunities galore! Check them out if you’re in Winnipeg and have an interest in community develop, urban food policy, or orchards.
What’s in the Orchard?
There are over 60 fruit trees with an excellent selection of varieties of apples, pears, apricots, cherries and plums.
There are also over 70 shrubs like haskap, currants, gooseberries, saskatoons, and more!
The fruit in the orchard is available for whoever would like to pick it. The apple and pear trees all had lots of fruit that wasn’t ready yet. The berries were in season so we tried a few of the ripe currants!
Most of the fruits are good eating varieties. There are a few multi-graft trees that include some hardy varieties that we know (and some we suspect!) make good cider.
Urban Orchard Aesthetic
The orchard is very picturesque and a unique mix of traditional orchard style with an urban influence.
The architectural landmark of the Human Rights Museum stands behind the orchard.
If you visit the Forks, it’s definitely worth a look at the many varieties in the orchard. If you live in Winnipeg, you should harvest some fruit and check out Winnipeg CORE!
